turtle island

(p.s. I'm on vacation in Vermont for a few days... so I will post less frequently until early next week - some beautiful relaxation is in order and I hope you have a great few days too!)
A short drive from our downtown Ottawa home are the beautiful Petrie Islands and wetlands.

We call the area Turtle Island because the area is home to several busy turtle populations. While we haven't yet seen any turtles hatch, we've run into many little white shell pieces, and hope to witness the hatching someday.

There's an incredible variety of birds (well over 130 species) and other variety of life at Petrie, largely due to the fact that the whole area floods each spring.

Native Canadians have been fishing and hunting in the area for thousands of years.

I guess we can add this to the list of reasons why living in Ottawa is pretty fantastic.
