our home birth journey: sweet reads

Last week, I talked about our birth journey here (something about that crazy snowstorm inspired me, I think) and I'm going to try to post regularly about our adventures until the little guy decides it's time to be born.

Here are some of the fabulous reads we've been trying to sneak in, in between all of the cooking, and feeling sick (still!!) and snow play.

If you have other suggestions, I'd be delighted to hear them. Oh, and if you have a home birth story you'd like to share - I'd be honored to post it up here for others to be inspired by. Me included.

  1. How exciting! When are you due again?

My 4-year old was born in the hospital, and my 18-month old was born at home. There's nothing like it! We're planning our second homebirth now for new babe due at the end of the summer.

Will your daughter be at the birth? My older son was almost 3 when his brother was born, but he slept through the whole thing (worked out great). I'm not sure what to do this time though. Another quick 3am birth would be convenient! :)

  2. i'd recommend Ina May's Guide to Childbirth to go along with the Spiritual Midwifery....and also Special Delivery (Rahima Baldwin Dancy). I had a planned homebirth that turned to hospital transfer (and unfortunately a c-section) and then a great HBAC the second time around. Homebirth is the only way to go!

  3. I got my two first at the House of Births (midwife run, no doc place) and I'm considering home birth for the next (planned in 2-3 years...but maybe already in!) since those houses are fuller in the place we're moving, and I don't want to go to an hospital!

  4. Ahh birthing books, I have read hundreds! BUT Birthing from within is still one of my absolute favourites. I read it while pregnant with my first daughter and have lent it to every client since (and then read it again with my second)

  5. happy birthing! I had two homebirths and a (necessary) hospital birth with my midwife there for support. I second the recommendation for Birthing from Within. Very empowering.

  6. Birthing from within. I had a hospital birth with a retired Navy male Dr., a home birth in a pool with a midwife & a hospital birth attended by a midwife. Three healthy babes, three natural and long births. I had a lot of fears before my second birth. I found it helpful to get them out of my head, onto a sheet of paper and burn them in our fireplace. I also made killer playlists for each birth. I couldn't have done my last birth without my ipod, custom playlists and that arm band thing-y for running. I love loud music at birth, but it's hard to do at a hospital.
I hope you find some good reads as you ready for your journey. Pat your belly for me.
